Open Question: How to keep my fabrics comfy?

My clothes are always ripping, stretched out, hard, faded, or just doesn't feel as good anymore. When I went over to my friend's house today, she returned a shirt that I lent her after wearing only one time. It's been half a year and that shirt was unbelievably soft and the colors didn't fade a single bit. How can I get my clothes to be like that? What I normally do with my clothes is grab everything (from the previous week) and shove it in the washer. I wash it on cold and 2nd rinse. Then if it was a good day and I had the time for it, I would hang up my clothes to save electricity. If not, I usually machine dry my clothes (from personal experience, the clothes felt less hard this way). *The shirt I lent my friend, I wore only one time. She wore it multiple times.
