Open Question: Using the "wrong" type of cleaning product?

Ok, this might sound weird to begin with, but bear with me! :-) I saw my flatmate use some multi-surface cleaner on a baking tin earlier. My initial thought was "oh my god that's horrible, why isn't she using the washing up liquid??!" But then I thought about it a bit more and wondered if I'm being silly? Do you think we're just conditioned to think that different things require different cleaning products so we just buy more stuff? I mean would using say, bathroom cleaner in the kitchen do any harm? Or are they just both basically detergents? Obviously I wouldn't use heavy duty stuff like oven cleaner on my teacups, but for the everyday stuff is there really a need for loads of different bottles?

Open Question: Do I need to wash/dry clean my brand new down comforter if I plan on using a duvet?

I bought it at a discount retailer (like Anna's Linens) at an outdoor tent sale so it seems more sketchy to me then if i had bought it at macys or something...Im going to use a duvet with it, but it seems like it might be a good idea to wash it before i use anyway..especially since i was touching everything in the store to get a feel for it and who knows how many unsanitary hands have done the same... also the lady at the store said shes instructed to tell everyone to dry clean only but i have been washing my old down comforter in the washer and air drying it for years without an issue...plus it only cost me $50 so paying $25-40 to have it dry cleaned seems silly....not to mention people reporting that dry cleaning it can leave it with a strange chemical odor.. Help!
