Open Question: How can I clean a "Moses basket"? Also, how can I reinforce the handle attachments?

I have an old "Moses basket" that I would like to refurbish and spruce up, then fit with linens and bows to make a beautiful Moses Basket for a friend that is expecting. What I have is only the basic, woven basket part. It is a lovely, strong weave basket - it actually looks just like this http://www.cradlesandbassinets.com/moses-baskets/147151+4295043157.cfm?Source=googleaw&kwid=moses%20basket&tid=phrase but without the fabric. It's the same color and everything. I bought it at an auction where it was being used to contain all the pieces of an old chandelier. I want to first give the entire thing a good scrub down but I don't know how best to clean it. There are no big stains or anything like that but there are a couple dirty spots and I wouldn't dream of putting a newborn into anything that wasn't completely cleaned first. I'm thinking I can do the cleaning in the bath tub but what type of soap can I use? Can I scrub it with a brush or will that fray the basketry material? There are a couple of places that are slightly cracked/frayed already - but it is still extremely sturdy. Is there any way to repair this? I would also like to reinforce the places where the handles attach to the main part of the basket. What do I need to use to do this? Is there a special basketry material I can find or would a simple raffia-type of material work OK? I know this is a lot of questions but I need help! I have so many ideas of how I want this to look but first and foremost I need to make sure it is very clean and sturdy... then I can get to the fun part! I guess the two main questions are: 1. How to clean it well without damaging it? 2. How to repair any cracked/frayed spots and reinforce the places where the handles attach? Thanks so much! Cheers!
